Zidovudine (ZDV), also known as azidothymidine (AZT), is an
antiretroviral medication used to prevent and treat HIV/AIDS. It
reduces the replication of the virus and leads to improvements in
both symptoms and blood tests. It can also be used to prevent HIV
transmission, such as from mother to child during the period of
birth or after a needle stick injury. Used by itself in
HIV-infected patients, AZT slows HIV replication in patients, but
does not stop it entirely. HIV may become AZT-resistant over time,
and therefore AZT is now usually used in conjunction with other
anti-HIV drugs in the combination therapy called highly active
antiretroviral therapy (HAART).
It is of the nucleoside analog reverse-transcriptase inhibitor
(NRTI) class. AZT inhibits the enzyme (reverse transcriptase) that
HIV uses to synthesize DNA, thus preventing viral DNA from forming.
AZT was the first U.S. government-approved treatment for HIV,
marketed under the brand name Retrovir. AZT is included in Combivir
and Trizivir. It is included in the World Health Organization's
Model List of Essential Medicines, which suggests the minimum
medicinal needs for a basic health care system.
- Usage A potent and selective inhibitor of HIV-1 replication
- Usage antibacterial
- General Description Slightly off-white odorless powdery solid. Air & Water Reactions Dust may form an explosive mixture in
air. Water soluble. Hydrolysis occurs in strongly basic solutions .
- Use: used as an anti AIDS and disease resistant poison, Zidorf as
the disease resistant poison, for AIDS or AIDS related syndrome
patients and immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection therapy. March
19, 1987, approved USA food and Drug Administration of the drug
listing. Zidorf is the first in the world to get a American FDA
approved the production of anti AIDS drugs, because of its curative
effect is accurate, become "the composition of the most basic
cocktail" therapy. The product is disease resistant poison, in
vitro on retroviruses including human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)
with high activity. In the infected cells by cell thymidine kinase
phosphorylation of three phosphoric acid zidovudine, the latter can
selectively inhibit HIV reverse transcriptase, leading to HIV chain
synthesis stops to prevent HIV replication.
Those who are allergic to the chemicals, pregnant women, severe
infection, severe trauma patients before and after surgery and
diabetic coma and insulin-dependent diabetes patients disabled.
1. severe liver and kidney dysfunction, should be reduced or
2. ischemic heart disease, pituitary and adrenal insufficiency
deputy, diarrhea, vomiting and malnutrition in patients with
3. Elderly patients and children with caution.
4. Use the regular testing of blood glucose, while other
hypoglycemic drugs such as insulin sensitizers, α- glucosidase
inhibitors in combination to adjust the dosage.
